Storytime 2/9: Raggedy Andy, and …

Last time at “early” storytime, I started reading Johnny Gruelle’s Raggedy Andy’s Stories, from 1920 – after having read his first book of stories about Raggedy Ann from 1919. They’re old-fashioned (also very white, though) children’s stories illustrated by the author. We’re about halfway through the book, so we’ll probably finish it this time. If not, we’ll finish it next time. If we do …

Well, last time at “late” storytime, I did a bit of a test, reading the introduction and first chapter of The Neverending Story, by Michael Ende, from 1983. I have the hardcover English translation by Ralph Manheim, with the text printed in red and green ink. There was a famous film in the 1980s loosely based on about the first half of this book; there was a sequel that was even more loosely based on some of the rest, and I didn’t bother with the third movie, so I don’t know what it was like. The book is amazing. I’m going to start with that in “early” storytime once we’re done with Raggedy Andy. I hope you like it as much as I do. I can go on and on about it. Chapters 1 through 11 build up to draw you in, chapter 12 is a pivot point, and then starting with chapter 13 it becomes a very different book that is a bit slower in pace but much deeper. It has an intro followed by 26 chapters. I might be able to read two chapters per session. We’ll see.

As for what I’ll read for “late” storytime, that depends as usual on what people want: I can repeat what I read for “early” storytime, or I can read something else.
